5 Simple Exercises to Promote Self-Regulation in University Students

Self-regulation is a key competency for successful learning and professional development. It includes setting goals, managing attention and time, persevering through challenges, and reflecting on one’s own learning processes. These skills do not develop automatically; they need to be practiced and supported through intentional learning activities.

The following five exercises, adapted from a German educational resource, offer simple and practical ways to foster self-regulation in higher education settings. They can be easily integrated into university courses and are particularly relevant for teacher education, where future educators need to develop self-regulation skills both for their own learning and to support their future students.
