Checklist: diversity in your subject and teaching practice
This checklist, originally developed in Dutch and now translated into English, made by Ghent University’s Directorate of Educational Affairs, offers a practical checklist to help teachers reflect on and strengthen diversity awareness in their teaching. It supports educators in identifying how diversity is already integrated into their course design, materials, and student interactions, while also highlighting areas for further development.
The checklist is organized into four main domains with their respective categories:
1. diversity in your subject
– learning about diversity
– multi-perspectivism
2. learning materials
– structure and language use
– recognizable and representative
– accessible
3. teaching and interactions with students
– safe learning environment and community building
– in conversation with students
– collaborative learning and heterogeneous groups
– attitude and expectations towards students
4. guiding and evaluating students
– guiding students
– evaluating students
Both teacher educators and pre-service teachers can use this tool for self-assessment and professional reflection when addressing diversity in their subject and teaching practice. Its clarity, practical examples, and direct classroom relevance make it a valuable resource for setting and achieving goals toward a more diversity-responsive and inclusive teaching practice.
