Diversity Responsive Education: the crucial role of teacher educators and their professional development

This resource contains the summary of the doctoral research by Benjamin Ponet on ‘The crucial role of teacher educators and their professional development on the road towards diversity-responsive education.’ It shows how teacher educators play a central role in fostering diversity-responsive education by addressing the following research objectives (RO): RO1: Conceptualising teacher educators’ diversity-responsive practices, which introduces the Teacher Educators’ Diversity-responsive Practices framework (TE-DIP), RO2: Mapping perceptions and practices of teacher educators regarding approaching diversity and RO3: Supporting teacher educators’ professional development for diversity-responsive education. The summary, available in Dutch and English, emphasizes the need for a shared language, ongoing professional development, and stronger attention to equity and diversity.

Following the summary is a PowerPoint used in a 120-minute lesson for educational sciences students based on this doctoral research. Originally developed in Dutch and now also available in English, both the dissertation and PowerPoint can be used for teacher educator professionalisation and in pre-service teacher preparation. It defines diversity, explains diversity-responsive education, and elaborates on the TE-DIP framework, organized into six clusters across three contexts: teaching assignments (cluster 1 to 4), professional development (cluster 5), and responsibilities as social change agents (cluster 6).

The six clusters, (1) creating inclusive learning environments, (2) challenging teachers’ frames of reference, (3) explicit modelling, (4) creating safe environments, (5) challenging one’s own frames of reference, and (6) raising societal responsiveness, also serve as search categories for the ED-TED online resource bank.
