Toolbox Gender and Diversity in Teaching
Toolbox Gender and Diversity in Teaching is a webpage developed and run by the Margherita-von-Brentano Center for gender studies at Freie Universität, Berlin. It is aimed at lecturers looking to incorporate questions of equity and diversity in their teaching and provides both introductory information and practical advice on content and methods. The page is available in German, English and Spanish. It contains a short introductory video to gender and diversity sensitive teaching, a checklist of gender and diversity conscious teaching methods as well as a list of guidelines and principles that foster gender and diversity conscious learning environments.
Most of the information and tools provided in English and Spanish are not specific to the German context and are equally applicable in other countries. There is a framework for developing gender and diversity skills for university teachers, guidelines for the planning and evaluation of lessons and courses and further content for self-study. In addition to these, the German part of the page contains further resources that specifically address (preservice) teachers. It includes extensive information on different forms of discrimination (e.g. ableism, classism, racism) as well as lesson plans and materials for addressing them in class. An English translation of these sections is in the planning stage.
