Creating Safe Spaces
This case study can be used to prompt meaningful dialogue among teacher educators about how to create emotionally safe and inclusive learning spaces. It offers a concrete scenario that illustrates the importance of subtle, intentional actions—such as visible symbols of support, inclusive teaching strategies, and personalized student engagement. Techer educators can use it individually for self-reflection or in groups to spark conversation about equity, empathy, and the teacher’s role in promoting student well-being. It can also serve as a springboard for professional learning sessions, encouraging participants to consider how small gestures and inclusive practices can significantly impact a student’s sense of belonging and safety in school. The guiding questions and the visual prompts could be used to inform the discussion. It is suggested to print and laminate the visual prompts (A5 would be the suggested size).
