Cross-cutting path of equality, equity and non-discrimination for teacher education curriculum or program

Cross-cutting path of equality, equity and non-discrimination for teacher education curriculum or program

The cross-cutting path of equality, equity and non-discrimination shows how these themes are integrated in nearly all courses and from different viewpoints. In the visual platform it is easy to see how equality, equity and non-discrimination are examined within and across the courses during the three year bachelor’s and two year master’s studies.

During the curriculum renewal process, the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki, Finland launched a new idea of cross-cutting paths through all courses and all teacher education programs. The process of creating the cross-cutting paths was co-operative and collegial and involved all teachers at the faculty. These themes deserve to be integrated in everything the future teachers study.

This kind of curriculum work, realized as a collaborative and inclusive process, results in a concrete product and provides additional value to the traditional curriculum. This idea and the visual representation offers any teacher education program a model or a tool to, firstly analyze their program through this theme, and secondly, implement this kind of process in their respective institute.
