The embodied toolkit

The embodied toolkit

Have you ever wondered if a Physical Education (PE) teacher needs to have a specific ‘body shape’? Have you ever had a ‘fat’ PE teacher? This toolkit invites us to think and reflect about body types in PE. It challenges and criticises dominant ways of how we think about bodies for (pre-service) PE teachers and students, by using real drawings from participants from different studies. By challenging stereotypes about bodies in the profession, we’ll be able to create more inclusive and equitable spaces in our field. It is particularly helpful for challenging PE teacher educators and pres-service teachers frames of reference, and for raising societal responsiveness to diversity. The prompts or guiding questions presented at the end (on slide 10), along with similar ones, could be used in a related module on the pedagogy of teaching and learning to foster discussion, debate, and critical reflection. They can help raise awareness and challenge dominant discourses related to the body in PE — and in other school subjects as well.
