The Multiverse Toolkit
Diversity & Inclusion Workshop: the Multiverse Toolkit
The Multiverse Toolkit is an interactive, visually engaging resource designed to open up meaningful dialogue around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Originally developed by Chiara Treglia as a proposal to the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) Diversity Fund in 2020, the toolkit won a grant that allowed it to be transformed into an accessible online platform. Since then, it has been officially adopted as a training tool for teams at TU/e and used in various staff and student sessions. Treglia emphasizes the power of creative approaches in addressing sensitive topics: unlike traditional DEI trainings, the Multiverse Toolkit invites playful exploration, critical reflection, and personal engagement.
Hosted on Miro, the toolkit guides participants through a virtual ‘board’ made up of interactive zones. Each zone contains prompts, visual metaphors, and creative exercises such as drawing your own “identity constellation” or responding to reflective questions using sticky notes. Participants navigate the board together in small groups (6–12 people), either synchronously during an online session or in a hybrid setting. Facilitators can guide the group through each step or allow for self-paced exploration, depending on the context. The Multiverse encourages participants to bring in their own experiences while developing an awareness of power dynamics and exclusion in educational or organizational contexts.
In teacher education, this resource can be used to foster reflective and inclusive mindsets among pre-service teachers or in professional development for educators and mentors. The toolkit is particularly well-suited for programmes focused on pedagogical sensitivity, social justice, and inclusive classroom practice. It encourages peer learning, perspective-taking, and open discussion, while lowering the threshold to talk about complex themes like bias, privilege, and systemic inequality.
