PASEO: Implications for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

PASEO: Implications for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

The PASEO: Implications for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, in Portuguese PASEO: Que Implicações para a Equidade, Diversidade e Inclusão, is a resource designed specifically for the Portuguese educational context. It is intended for teacher educators to engage student teachers in a critical analysis of educational policies, focusing on the conceptual framework of the Student Profile at the End of Compulsory Education, in Portuguese, Perfil dos Alunos à Saída da Escolaridade Obrigatória, also known as PASEO. Established in 2017, PASEO serves as a key reference for educational decision-making at both institutional and policy levels. It provides a common framework for all schools and educational offerings within compulsory education, shaping curriculum development, planning, implementation, and both internal and external assessment of teaching and learning.

This activity is structured in two phases. In the first phase, student teachers work in pairs to analyse the conceptual framework of the PASEO. Student teachers are asked to identify and critically examine the principles, areas of competence, and values explicitly linked to equity, diversity, and inclusion. This stage encourages participants to reflect on how these foundational elements are embedded within the broader educational framework and their implications for teaching practice.

In the second phase, student teachers are challenged to propose concrete classroom activities aimed at fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion based in the PASEO. This step encourages student teachers to translate theoretical insights into practical strategies that can be implemented in diverse educational settings.

By engaging with this activity, student teachers develop a deeper understanding of the role of national education policies in shaping inclusive teaching practices. They also enhance their ability to critically evaluate and apply policy frameworks in ways that promote equitable and diverse learning environments.
